Educated in Confucian traditions and later a high official, he was known for his disdain for wealth, despite his privileged origins. Wang Yan embodied the “gentleman’s style”, with an aura of warmth and refinement comparable to that of jade: graceful in movement, with a detached gaze and a serene spirit.
